History: TTGL Wikia is here, Wikipedia here. Basically, humans live underground, beastmen live on the surface. Boy visits surface with his father but is too scared to stay, goes back underground and grows up with a complex. Boy becomes a total reckless badass, talks his tiny buddy and the hot chick from next door into starting a revolution with him, dies gloriously in battle before he has to deal with adult repercussions of his actions.

Personality: Kamina is first and foremost a man of indomitable will. He makes a goal, sets his sights on it, and nothing can turn him from it. Those who admire it call him determined. Those who don't call it stubborn and pigheaded. There's truth to both sides of it. Whatever it is, it means that Kamina can set his sights on the impossible and always somehow finds a way to make it happen, though it may take years. He never seems to have any self-doubt, encouraging others to "kick logic to the curb and do the impossible!" That very same focus and drive can make him oblivious to everything else around him, including the cost to the people who fight by his side. Kamina himself is just empathetic enough to not come across as narcissistic, though he's certainly arrogant. That arrogance, however, conceals deep wells of self-doubt and a struggle to redeem himself for his past decisions that he views as cowardly.

As a child, Kamina was brought to the surface by his father. Then, he didn't have the courage to step into the unknown with his old man and instead retreated back into the underground tunnels. That decision is one he's always regretted and one he can never forgive himself for. It's the decision that's at the root of everything Kamina has made of himself to this day. Because he was a coward once, he can never be a coward again. He never backs down from a fight, even if it means getting himself beaten bloody or killed. He won't run away from a battle, even if it means he loses a war. In fact, if it weren't for his friends, Simon especially, Kamina would have gotten himself killed a long time ago. He's got a reckless streak a mile wide, and lives to impress his memory of a father who walked out without him over a decade ago. This memory is a glorified ideal, and is the model man that Kamina struggles to build himself into.

In the early parts of the series, we can see that most people in Jiiha village, Kamina's home, believe that the surface is nothing more than a myth, and that mankind has always lived underground. Kamina is a maverick for believing, a dangerous threat to the status quo, the mayor of Jiiha believes, and even Kamina's small-time gang doesn't really believe in the surface, only sticking around because Kamina threatens and cajoles in equal measure and fills their heads with thoughts of treasure and the easy life. Simon is the only one who truly believes in Kamina, and Simon is a large part of how Kamina defines himself as a man.

Simon was orphaned in an earthquake/cave-in when he was very young. The village chief raised him with a strong work ethic, but it was Kamina who encouraged him to have dreams, told him he was more than just a cog in a machine, tried to instill in him a belief that he was meant for more than Jiiha village. Simon became a conspirator, a friend, and ultimately a brother. More than once, Kamina has given all the credit for his own successes solely to Simon, refusing to accept that credit for himself. Often, he tells Simon to "believe in the me that believes in you," and a large part of that is because Kamina does the very same thing. Simon looks up to him, believes that he can accomplish anything, and it's because of Simon's faith that Kamina has the strength to accomplish the impossible.

Where Simon has faith, Yoko has the opposite, at least at first and out loud. Kamina is crude towards her the first time they meet, commenting on her body, but still respects her fighting talents. In fact, a large part of what interests Kamina is the fight in her, the fact that Yoko doesn't just accept anything, even his own spiel. She challenges him in a way that's completely new, challenges him to be more than just the dumb brawler he acts like. They argue pretty much constantly, but that's what creates the mutual respect that develops between them which later becomes something more intimate. He respects Yoko's strength, both physical and emotional, and trusts her enough to show her parts of him that he can't even show to Simon: the doubts he has, his occasional fears. Kamina knows his weaknesses. He just can't ever let them control his actions.

While he likes to think of himself as a heroic figure, posturing and dictating his own epic legend as the generations after will remember him, Kamina is constantly aware of his own mortality, especially after making it to the surface and finding his father's remains. Death is inevitable, life is short, so there's no time to waste being wishy-washy or turning back. All you can do is go straight through the obstacles in front of you and charge headfirst into tomorrow, and hope that you make it before your time runs out. Mortality makes him reckless, as he ends up terrified of failing like his father did.

For all his flaws, his arrogance, his reckless behavior and lack of solid planning, Kamina also has a soft streak a mile wide and a big heart he wears on his nonexistent sleeve. He's as loyal as they come, always supporting his friends, the first one to cheer them on and give them as much tough love as they need to reach their full potential. Sure, sometimes that love is a little too rough, but it comes from the best of intentions. He's not a genius, though he does show the occasional stroke of tactical brilliance. He's a brawler, at his heart, and he fights with all his strength to break through what's in front of him. Even as he dies, he dies content knowing that Simon will continue the fight for all of them, and that he's done his best to give everyone around him the tomorrow they all deserve.

Inventory: Kamina comes in with his cape and sword and shades, as seen here (although let's be real, it's probably more like this). There's also the addition of a brand new giant scar across his chest, courtesy of Thymilph.

Abilities: Kamina is just your average brawny 18-year-old. Nothing super special about that, really. He's a pretty great brawler, and has shown that he's pretty good at picking up and mastering weapons, once he figures out how they work. His chosen weapon in hand-to-hand combat is a long, slim sword, but he knows how to use a gun and isn't bad with it. Of course, guns are last resorts. A real man faces his enemy head-on and close-up! He's not the most intelligent guy on the planet, and most of his plans involve charging right through the front door, but he comes off as basically a tactical savant. Either that, or just plain lucky. Also, he's definitely rolled a natural 20 for charisma.

Flaws: While Kamina is ultimately a force for Good, he definitely ranks on the Chaotic Good side of the spectrum. He's brash, reckless, and terrified of weakness. He runs from his past headlong into the future, and it doesn't matter who gets hurt along the way. He's stubborn to a fault, and incredibly arrogant, which only serves to hide his crippling insecurities and lack of belief in his own strengths. He doesn't plan things through, and he's been known to rush into trouble unprepared and drag other people right along with him. He's easily frustrated, and lashes out when people voice the same doubts he's feeling. He also tends to see the world in black and white, with no patience or room for subtleties and moral uncertainty.
